Cross trainers, also known as elliptical trainers or elliptical cross-trainers or X-trainers, have become increasingly popular since the millennium. These machines offer a low-impact workout that can benefit people of all fitness levels. In this article, we will explore the benefits of using a cross trainer and why it maybe should be a part of your fitness routine.

One of the main benefits of using a cross trainer is that it provides a low-impact workout. Unlike running or other high-impact exercises, using a cross trainer puts less stress on your joints, making it a great option for those with joint pain or injuries. This also means that you can use a cross trainer for longer periods of time without feeling fatigued or experiencing discomfort.
Many of our distance runners use the cross trainer for volume work, as part of their rehabilitation, when they're unable to run long distance, due to injury.
A cross trainer works both the upper and lower body, making it a great option for a full-body cardiovascular workout. The pedals move in an elliptical motion, engaging your leg muscles and posterior chain, while the handles move back and forth, working your arms, shoulders, and upper back. This combination of movements allows you to work multiple muscle groups at once, making your workout efficient and effective.
Utilising so many muscles in it's ellipse action, using a cross trainer is a great way to get your heart rate up and improve your cardiovascular health, as your body works harder to pump oxygenated blood around your body. By increasing your heart rate, you are strengthening your heart health and further improving its ability to pump blood and oxygen throughout your body. This can lead to improved endurance and overall cardiovascular fitness.
If weight loss is your goal, a cross trainer can be a great tool to help you achieve it. By engaging multiple muscle groups and increasing your heart rate, you are burning more calories in a shorter amount of time. It can be a great compliment to weight training and other forms of cardio exercise.
Cross trainers come in a variety of styles and offer different features, making them a versatile piece of equipment for your fitness routine. Some cross trainers have adjustable resistance levels, allowing you to increase the intensity of your workout as you progress. Others have built-in programs that can simulate different terrains and/ or different types of workout e.g. steady state workouts or various interval workouts.
You can also find different example cross trainer workouts in our blog, both steady state and interval workouts.

Another benefit of using a cross trainer is its convenience. They're readily available to buy for your home; although, I recommend spending on a decent cross trainer, such as the Life Fitness ones that we offer. If you do not have the budget for a Life Fitness cross trainer, I recommend joining your local gym. Most gyms will have one and there's usually at least one available to use (not in use), as many leisure trainers prefer to jump on a treadmill, instead.
In conclusion, incorporating a cross trainer into your fitness routine can provide numerous benefits, including a low-impact, full-body workout, improved cardiovascular health, weight loss, versatility, and convenience. So next time you hit the gym, be sure to give the cross trainer a try and experience these benefits for yourself.
