When it comes to choosing a gym grass track, there are key factors to consider. The type of turf you decide to use is as important as selecting the right pieces of gym equipment. In this article, we will discuss the top considerations to keep in mind when selecting a gym grass track.

Durability

One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a gym grass track is durability. This is especially important for high-traffic areas where the turf will be subjected to heavy use and potential damage. Look for turf that is made from high-quality materials and has a strong backing to ensure it can withstand the wear and tear of daily use. Additionally, consider the maintenance requirements of the turf and choose one that is easy to clean and maintain.

Shock Absorption

Another crucial factor to consider is shock absorption. This is especially important for athletes who engage in high-impact activities such as running or jumping. A gym grass track with good shock absorption will help reduce the risk of injury and provide a more comfortable training experience. However, if the shock absorption is to the detriment of the activity being performed upon it, you may limit the exercises and equipment that can be used. For most gyms, you want your shock absorption to be achieved by a plush grass pile and not a cushioned underlay. This will ensure some absorption underfoot but with an adequate firmness. Moreover, it does not render the blanket susceptible to potential incursion (harm).

Traction

Traction is another important consideration when choosing a gym grass track. The turf should provide enough grip to prevent slipping and sliding, but not so much that it slows down your movements. This is especially important for athletes who need to make quick and precise movements or with heavy sled use. Look for turf with a textured surface or one that is specifically designed for traction. To ensure uniform traction across the track, it's crucial that grass blades are omni-directional (in all directions).

Versatility

From kids classes to HYROX and Strongman. Get a track that can cater for everyone!

A versatile gym grass track is one that can be used for a variety of activities and sports. This is important for gyms that offer a range of fitness programs and classes. Look for turf that is suitable for activities such as classes, running, weightlifting, and agility training. This will ensure that your gym grass track can accommodate all types of workouts and provide a well-rounded training experience for your members.

Cost

Of course, cost is always a factor when making any purchase. When it comes to gym grass tracks, it's important to find a balance between quality and affordability. While it may be tempting to choose the cheapest option, keep in mind that a low-quality turf may not last as long or provide the necessary features for a successful training experience. Consider the long-term benefits and costs when making your decision.

Based on our lengthy experience, a well-placed budget track could serve you for 18 months to 2 years in a gym with high footfall. A top-tier track is likely to last you more than 5 years, even longer if not mistreated by members.

The saying truly holds, if you purchase cheap, you end up buying twice.

Installation

Crucial to the durability of a grass track is the preparatory work. The underlayer needs to be tidy and devoid of dust and debris. The method of fixation of the track must align with its intended use. A correspondingly sticky floor, such as one finished with latex or furnished with plywood and duct tape, can be supported with abundant strips of carpet tape. If the floor is a lower-quality finished concrete and intended for hefty sled and strongman exercises, an appropriate adhesive should be spread over the entire surface. Be careful to avoid over-application in this case, as this could cause the blanket to seep and produce varying traction patches on the grass above.

Is There Another Choice?

Firstly, dismiss the idea of using carpet! It's not durable! Carpet is utilised at Hyrox events as it's economical and can be disposed of after several uses. The cost of it is factored into the event's pricing. You wouldn't want your gym members utilising a ragged carpet after just a few weeks.

Choosing grass top gym tiles is the smartest decision for most gym setups - even smarter than opting for high-end grass track. Here are a few explanations...

  1. They can be used for any activity.
  2. They are near-indestructible, even with member misuse.
  3. You can expand, decrease, or move your track.
  4. Price-wise, they fall somewhere between a budget track and a premium track.

Why am I not opting for grass top gym tiles? It's worth considering. Most people avoid it because a premium grass track roll seems aesthetically more pleasing and is customisable to align with your gym theme and brand. For this specific reason, I also prefer a premium grass track rather than grass top tiles.

Gym Reputation

It's important to consider the reputation of your brand when choosing a gym grass track. High-quality and functionally sound products, including your flooring, reflects on your gym.

Look for suppliers that have a proven track record of providing high-quality, durable, and versatile gym-specific turf. Do your research and go see some gyms with tracks, if you can. This will give you a better understanding of the company's reputation and the quality of their products.

By keeping these factors in mind, you can choose the best gym grass track for your facility and provide your members with a top-notch training experience.
